Two travesties for the price of one. First, a letter on
Romenesko today:
An AP reporter today was the one to tell Nick Berg's family [ED NOTE: Berg, for those who haven't heard yet, is the first civillian example of the fallout from the Abu Ghraib debacle] that a video of his beheading was on a website. The family collapsed from shock and grief on the front lawn.
Wow. What a rotten situation for both the family and the reporter. That brings up all kinds of ethical issues. What do others think? Should the reporter have told the Berg family or not?
A reporter is supposed to "minimize harm." Telling the Berg family about the video was obviously harmful. But the reporter isn't responsible for the video. And what could the reporter do at that point, anyway? Walk away? Say "uh, nevermind." Plus, this reporter was among the first of a horde to descend on the Berg family today anyway. ...
Not that it's cool or justified in any way, but honestly, is anybody REALLY surprised that al Qaeda's pissed off by our frat-boy antics? No, seriously.
Anyway, the second bit of grief comes by way of Kaffy, who shared this with me the other night. I must admit, I'm kinda surprised that I haven't seen it pop up anywhere yet, unless it has and I'm just dim. Anyway ...
Every four years, the United Methodist Church holds its General Conference, whereby all the Church important people talk about the direction the church is going, set budgets and so on and so forth. Well, at the 2000 conference, the church voted overwhelmingly to not allow gays in the ministry. Not altogether a big shocker, but Kaffy's church, which has a large gay population, remained cautiously optimistic that four years could do a lot in the way of educating and changing the hearts and minds of many.
Think you know where this is going? Betcha you don't, because I didn't see this coming a mile away, and I'm usually good at that kind of stuff.
Well, at the 2004 General Conference held April 27 to May 7, the Church important people voted again on whether to allow gays in the ministry. This time, the measure was defeated by only four votes. Progress, right? Yeah, no, not at all. Know why? Because the Church important people also voted that its official position on homosexuality is that it's "incompatible with Christian teaching." Yup. Not only that, but Church finance people can now cut off funding for any parish that's "promoting the acceptance of homosexuality," unless it has to do with HIV/AIDS or educational events where no one can consider the church pro-gay.
With me so far? Because we ain't done yet: Pastors and other Church leader people can kick you out of the church if you're gay, if you perform gay marriages and any kind of ceremony celebrating gay marriage. Oh yeah, and to even the playing field, you can also get kicked out for premarital sex and-or having an affair if you're married.
Needless to say, Kaffy's church will probably be looking for a new home.

Oh, whatEVER.
what do you say to that? I’m so tired of the whole ‘gay is wrong’ issue...it’s obvious the leaders of “churches” oh yes and “states” are simply intimidated by the whole issue...hence their whole...you can be who you want and live how you want just so long as you don’t do it here or there or effect my life to any degree. Whatever. I thought ‘God’ accepted everyone...sinner or not, I guess THAT part of the bible is wrong?
