Plus, I heard "Squeezebox" by The Who on my way home tonight, and how can that song not make you smile?

I like the second ones! I’ve been looking at these and these. Whatchya think?
The second linky didn’t work, but I likey the first linky. I could definitely see you in those.
Had a familial falling out of my own this past week. Turns out that now that I’m 30 and in a committed relationship and have to juggle my family with my girlfriend’s family… NOW my parents decide that they want to see me all the time. Just me. And not be given the part-time treatment.
This was spawned by my mother pitching a fit (in her own Jewish Mother sort of way. read: GUILT!) about the fact that I was planning to spend the afternoon and evening with her after having brunch with Misha’s mom. Brunch=2 hours Afternoon and Evening = 6 hours. But she still saw this as me squeezing her in between Misha’s mom and going home.
Then, on Sunday, my Dad pitched a fit (in his own non-confrontational sort of way. read: Slammed down his coffee cup and stormed out of the room) when I suggested that we didn’t want to stay much past 4pm. I LIVE 3 FUCKING HOURS AWAY! GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!
Excuse me for living, for wanting to have a life of my own, for trying to split time between my family and the family of the woman I love for TWO (count ‘em TWO) holidays every year. Thanks to Religion and Divorce, we’ve only got to figure out how to split up Thanksgiving and Mother’s Day. My parents’ answer… Drop Misha off at her mom’s and spend the day with them. Well maybe I’m being selfish but fuck that.
You’ve had your life, now let me live mine. I’m not 12, so don’t treat me that way. I’m 30 and I’m a Supervisor over 14 people at my job. I own a house and 2 cars. I’m practically married. I’m 2.5 kids away from being average. You did a great job raising me, I’m a complete person. And while there’s still room for you in my life, you’re no longer the beginning and the end of my existence.
Thanks, I feel better now,
Dix
My favorite Who song evah! Mama’s got a squeezebox, daddy never sleeps at night!
Broad,
Sorry, didn’t mean to totally toss your issues aside or minimize them.
If your mom thinks that you’re to blame for the troubles of both your families, then perhaps you should do her a favor and say goodbye. You know she’s only lashing out to blame someone else for her hardships, and it would seem that at the stage she’s at, she’s not below transferring blame to her own daughter.
I have an uncle who’s a bitter bastard of an old man. Always complaining about how everyone else is doing things wrong or doing him wrong. It’s about to drive my cousin crazy and it darn near drove my entire family crazy when the two of them starting a shouting match across the Passover table over what step was supposed to come next. And don’t get me started about how he tried repeatedly to wrest control of the Seder from my dad. Chronic pain makes people nasty and bitter… he used to be such a nice guy.
Who can say what your mom’s motivations were. People are inherently selfish. I think I proved at least that much in my last post. It’s when they start blaming the world for their problems that they’ve crossed a line and need to be put in their place. Suggest to her that you and she take a break. That since your presence is apparently problematic, your absence should make things better. This hypothesis is based on her own observations, so it must be sound, right? See how she reacts to that.
Playing god,
Dix
Dix, please. All forms of bitching, ranting and wailing are welcome here. It’s all equal opportunity bitching up in Chez Broad. You know that. Besides, anything to take my mind off my crap is okely dokely.
And your folks are doing it because you’re the responsible child. Betcha they don’t give Lil’ sis nearly as much crap.
And, Dix, I’d bet they’re holding on tighter now because they sense the seriousness of the relationship with the girlfriend. You know the old saying, “Have a daughter and she’s your daughter for life. Have a son and he’s your son till he gets a wife.” In my family, that is true. Sisters are still very involved; brother is not so much. Maybe they’re scared of losing you.
Of course, holding onto you like a squeezed little bunny (call them George) ain’t gonna help.
That’s a good pair, sg. Simple and classy.
