Been itchin’ to go off on another one of my pseudo political rants, but then I read the paper this morning and well, lookyhere! my latest pet peeve has been addressed: Lookit
For those I haven’t spouted off to over the past few weeksunaware, Indiana issued at the beginning of the year a new license plate. And it’s a lovely plate, all blue with a nice big American Flag and “In God We Trust” in a pleasant white serif font. If nothing else, it’s damn more attractive than the current plates, which are and have been ass-ugly since they rolled out in 2004. You can even get the new plate AT NO EXTRA CHARGE when you go to renew your plates.
That’s great, except for the obvious problem that the state is opting to throw away a sizable chunk of change so we can all look like a bunch of simple, God-fearin’ folk. I mean, if someone can find data on how many Hoosiers actually attend Christian churches regularly and faithfully, please send it my way; otherwise, you’re not going to convince me that everyone’s getting this plate because they’re devout Christians. Judging by the cars I see on the road every day of my life, however, you will convince me that we’re a vain bunch of m’er f’ers when it comes to our rides—again, 2004 license plates? Ass-ugly, so who WOULDN’T jump at the chance to get a better-looking plate FOR ZERO DOLLAH (besides me, because I’m pissed off enough about this issue, plus it goes against every one of Mother’s sensibilities, and that’s an always an added bonus)!?? It’s just like those morons who buy “Support the Troop” magnets, if you think about it: They’d much rather shell out the $2 to a for-profit business on a ribbon magnet—not to mention ruin their paint jobs—than, say, spend $4 on a pack of disposable razors or toilet paper to send overseas to an actual soldier. At least the for-profit’s making money, because the STATE sure won’t with this nightmare.
No. Separate church and state, or else every single religion in Indiana needs to have its own plate available free-of-charge.
@ Ogger: I knew you were going to go there, and I also know what you’re going to say to my next point. But I’ll say it, anyway: Have you looked at the makeup of this General Assembly? It’s as Judeo-Christian as it gets. With that in mind, do you really think the GA was thinking of any other God than the one we know? And I’m not even talking about anyone being intentionally and flagrantly discriminatory—we’ll leave that to states like Missouri (<a href="http://www.thinkchristian.net/?p=663">Lookit). I’m talking about frame of reference.
If I say the “god” in “In god we trust” means “baal” who will say a word?
What exactly is it that so horrifies you about god that his presence on a license plate causes you such great fear?
When the state stays out of the church, I’ll worry about the church staying out of the state.
My annoyance has nothing at all to do with “God” being on the plate; my issue is with the fact that people are allowed to get it free-of-charge when it should be a vanity plate. I mean, I want a plate that promotes the eradication of cancer of all kinds, so shouldn’t that be available free-of-charge, too? After all, EVERYONE supports no more cancer, right? So why should we have to pay for it? Same thing with the “Support the Troops” plates that I just discovered you can get free-of-charge as well. The money collected there could be theoretically going toward the Indiana National Guard or some other military-related endeavor.
And if it cost more you wouldn’t say anything about it. Or would that be another debate?
if you’re going to support the troops you will. If you’re going to support the church, you will. Taxing a plate to force people to do so is the worst form of gummint intervention. The state already gets enough of my tax dollars. And I prefer to direct how my charity money is spent.
Why would it be another debate? I already said I don’t have a problem with either of them as vanity plates.
Let me ask you this: If the GA offered an “Out of Iraq” plate free-of-charge, would you be Ok with that?
As long as I was free to choose not to have that plate. but of course, there’s absolutely no reason to GET out of iraq, so that plate would be meaningless. “In god we trust” on the other hand, has been on the US currency since day zero, and has provenance. And has nothing whatsoever to do with the first amendment. On the other hand, states all over are catering to the needs and desires of Islam, a purely toxic creed, and almost no mention whatsoever is ever made of that fact.
I have a question. Are the plates totally free? Or are they the same price as a regular renewal, i.e. in IL it costs $78 to renew a basic license plate, more for vanity plates.
@ Kaffy: It’s the same price as the regular renewal. You can choose to replace the ass-ugly one with either the God one or the Troops one free-of-charge; all others are considered “vanity.”
Dude, the old ones are ASS ugly, you’re right. If onlly they could have ones with confederate flags that say ‘in Renseltucky we trust’ for the Jasper folks, then it might be closer to fair.
This would never, ever pass in California. I mean, we’ve got an athiest up in San Francisco getting sue-happy over using “God” in The Pledge in his kid’s school.
But then, I’m not in Caliornia - or Indiana - any more, so what do I care.
Your newest Charlottean,
Dix
Still: for ugly, you can’t beat the 84-87 plates.
Which ones were those? The white, orange and green ones? Yeah, but at least they weren’t trying to be “amber waves of grain” in shades of acid green and purple. The ones we have now don’t even make sense.

I’m gonna get one. And every single religion in the state has one. Who says what god it pertains to?
