Four or five years after the blogging boom, the paper is now allowing its more popular beat writers to have blogs. And who are writers asking for advice? That would be ME.

I have my own ideas, of course, but what do y’all think makes a good blog?

We must stop them. Please don’t corrupt the young. Give them a chance to blog in harmony with the wonders of cyberspace. Any of them ask you if it’d be OK to write about having a frozen ass?Tell them no!
I happen to think my frozen ass is of great import.
Two things make a blog great. Car chases and hanggliders. Wait, those two things make action movies great. What was the question again?
On a more serious note, I’d say that blogs all need to have some basic elements:
- a cohesive topic or message
- a grasp of its audience
- enough updates to make coming back worthwhile
Once you have these, to make the blog successful, there are 3 basic routes you can go:
- Humor (clean or scatological)
- Sensationalism (Perez Hilton, TMZ, etc)
- Mastery (or purported mastery) of their subject matter (engadget, technocrunch, etc)
While Humor will gain you a loyal following, rabid fans can usually only be had by the other two routes, but these usually require selling your soul to the blogdevil.
